Walter Thomas Abercrombie

Walter and his wife Rhoda and daughter Muriel came to Australia from Liverpool in the very late 1890’s and settled in South Australia. He soon put his entrepreneurial skills to use and became a well-respected carpenter/ builder. He was fortunate at the time of arrival in South Australia as the state was on the move. Railways were being constructed, churches built and land was being cleared for residential blocks.

Walter built several influential buildings in Adelaide- the Adelaide Railway Station, several churches and worked on the South Australia’s Parliament house.

Being the first and only great grandson at the time, Jeff recalls being read the encyclopaedia by Walter, and then being asked questions to see if he was listening. Walter also made a seat for Jeff to sit with him on his motor bike as they would drive around the country side exploring the new state of South Australia.
