After completing a degree in commerce and economics at the University of West Australia in 1998, Mark spent his twenties travelling and managing hotels, bottle shops and restaurants both in Australia and the UK. His interest in wine was first sparked by developing wine lists for restaurants in Melbourne and Edinburgh. He completed the WSET Advanced Certificate whilst living in Scotland.
Mark decided to pursue winemaking and gain hands-on experience, with his first post being several weeks’ unpaid work at a small domaine in the south of France. Here he was exposed to vineyards, cellar hand work, packaging and wine culture. He was hooked, and completed his first full (paid) vintage at another domaine in that region in 2003.
Mark returned to Australia to further his new wine career after convincing his Irish partner, Andrea, to emigrate. He worked a 3 year stint at Houghton Wines in the Swan Valley, where he progressed to Senior Cellarhand, learning all the tricks of cellar work while commencing winemaking studies at Charles Sturt University.
Mark moved to Margaret River to feed his desire to make top quality Chardonnay and Cabernet, convincing his wife to uproot again. He joined the Howard Park team as Senior Cellarhand in 2006, progressing to Assistant Winemaker in 2008, Site Winemaker in 2011 and Senior Winemaker in 2015.
Whilst at Howard Park, Mark completed winemaking degree and has become an integral member of the winemaking team. Working closely with Chief Winemaker, Janice McDonald, he oversees all winemaking and production processes from fruit receival through to bottling. Mark is responsible for ensuring quality, and crafting the best possible wine from the excellent fruit delivered throughout the vintage period.
Mark and Andrea were married in 2008, by which time they were firmly settled in Margaret River. When not making wine, you can find Mark hanging out with his 4 young children, walking or cycling the many bush tracks, or swimming at the fabulous beaches that the Margaret River area has to offer.
