2002 Howard Park Riesling Reviews

My top wines were made by Fromm in Marlborough, Howard Park in Western Australia, Rolly Gassemann in Alsace (France) and Kerpend in the Mosel Valley of Germany. Howard Park is a quality-focussed wine producer in Western Australia with a winery in Margaret River and a second in the Great Southern area. It is the latter cooler area that produced the grapes for Howard Park?s ethereal 2002 riesling. This is a wine that could have been made by elves. It is delicate and subtle, yet has impressive power as evidenced by a flavour that remains long after the wine has been swallowed. A riesling to die for.

A flagship Great Southern riesling from Western Australia, Howard Park 2002 seems to have more depth and ripeness than usual. The nose has intense pear, lime juice and mineral scents. The palate has a smooth middle of real richness and length. A surfeit of tangy acidity promises great longevity.

Wonderfully powerful, concentrated riesling that needs time and should live for 20 years. It needs food now because of its high acidity. Intense spicy, citrusy aroma that s already complex. Dried flowers, herbs, minerals and stone fruits. Screw-capped.

Yellow colour with a lifted nose of strong initial lemon. Flavoursome palate of ripe citrus with good length and steely acidity.

Still great value, this clean, savoury riesling has lots of refreshing, appetising greens in its aroma, with lemon pith and kiwifruit flavours seeping through. It s a pristine, elegant, rapier slick wine, and its long, tapering finish has fine pithy tannins which dry the palate in a most hunger-building manner. Like other of the best rieslings of the west, the wine has faint, complex hints of cheese and fishstock, which may sound strange but in reality provides quite some delight and makes it more interesting with food.
