2001 Howard Park Riesling Reviews

For wine lovers tired of oak, this wine is pure fruit - Bramley apples, lemon and lime zest and passionfruit...It s really just a celebration of everything zesty and citrus with just a finger dip of honey.

Readers of the November 2001 issue of Australian Review of Wines will know how big a fan I am of the Howard Park Riesling 2001. I have now seen it on four separate occasions and it has never failed to impress. The style has more in common with Porongurup than it does with either the Mount Barker floor or Frankland (although it is sourced predominantly from Mount Barker). A powerful, exaggerated Riesling with a perfume of lemon zest, mineral bath salts and magnolia leading to a concentrated, remarkably intense, almost pungent personality in the mouth with electric acidity running the length. Very backward now (do not serve it cold if you drink it young), it needs time in the cellar to put some flesh on its bones.

A superb example, a near-perfect wine of great character, worthy of the big occasion and the best company.) A wine of two parts; a vivacious nose of passionfruit, citrus and floral aromas that s sweetly tangy and succulent, and an austere palate with tight, reserved, minerally flavours of great refinement, backed up by slightly tart fresh acidity. Ageing: A 1990 tasted recently was essency and lovely. This should develop well, too.

Tight, lean, angular with excellent structure and acidity. Way too young to drink now and would be like breaking up with a supermodel before she hits her straps - hang out if you can. Maybe a year or two.
