Artist Dances to a Different Tune

David Burch was for more than a decade, one of the stars of the Australian Ballet. Working with the nation’s most prestigious dance company, he toured the globe and worked with the masters.

Now he moves on a very different stage, managing his brother’s vineyards at Margaret River’s Howard Park Wines, where the popular MadFish and Howard Park ranges of wine are finely crafted.

The dancer turned viticulturist will be conducting tours of a different nature during the forth-coming annual Margaret River Festival. A first for Howard Park and Margaret River.

Visitors to the winery will discover David’s passion, discipline and creativity when touring with him through Howard Park’s highly acclaimed ‘Leston’ Vineyard, named after David’s father, Leston Burch.

David describes the connection between his forays into theatre and viticulture as both involving a fairtytale.

"Like the theatre, there is a certain amount of fairytale in wine and in the vineyards themselves," he says.

Sitting in the winery, with a glass of its Mt Barker Award medal-winning Riesling in hand, David gazes through a stand of pale-barked gums to the sweeping lines of vines below.

The scene is bathed in the golden light of a setting sun, as he says: "To me this place has charisma. There is a little show down here every day that any staging director would be proud to put his name on."

‘Leston’ Vineyard Tours will be conducted during the weekend of 16 and 17 November 2002. Bookings are essential. Walking shoes imperative. Call Howard Park Wines Margaret River Winery on (08) 9756 5955.

Interviews and photo opportunities with David Burch are available.
