A Cool Victory for Howard Park Riesling

Howard Park Wines was awarded a Gold Medal and the Champion Riesling Trophy at the recent National Cool Climate Wine Show in Bathurst, New South Wales for its 2006 Howard Park Riesling.

The prestigious accolade coincides with Howard Park’s 20th Anniversary Celebrations which recently culminated in an International Riesling Tasting Event to honour Riesling as the very first varietal released in the Howard Park range in 1986.

The National Cool Climate Wine Show is a benchmark of maritime and continental cool climate wines produced in Australia which fall within the Show’s definition of cool climate. This being grapes grown in vineyards with cool nights during the growing season, four distinct seasons, a large variation in daytime to night time temperatures, cool autumns and heat degree days that are 1600 or less.

Howard Park was one of only two Western Australian wineries to win a Champion Trophy at this year’s National Cool Climate Wine Show, which received a record 749 wines for judging.

The 2006 Howard Park Riesling was made from grapes grown in Western Australia’s Great Southern sub-regions of Mount Barker and the Porongurups.

“The Mount Barker and Porongurup sub-regions of the Great Southern produce world class, distinctive and expressive Riesling wines, with our 2006 Howard Park Riesling being a fine example of this,” says Michael Kerrigan, Chief Winemaker for Howard Park Wines.

“The cool climatic conditions in a continental pattern of warm days and cold nights produce grapes with vibrant, zesty and super fine citric and mineral characters that can be enjoyed as a young bright fresh wine or held for many years to let the buttered toast and nutty complexity develop.”

In addition to the Champion Riesling Trophy, Howard Park was also awarded Silver medals for the 2005 Howard Park Chardonnay and 2004 Howard Park ‘Scotsdale’ Cabernet Sauvignon.
